Safe Sport

Climbing Escalade Canada believes that everyone has the right to participate in sport. We should all experience the joy sport provides regardless of the level of ability. All athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers have the right to participate in a safe and inclusive training and competitive environment that is free of abuse, harassment or discrimination.

CEC believes that any sport competition, whether it is a CEC-sanctioned event or not, must have the welfare of everyone at the forefront. A key component of a safe environment is the existence of an independent dispute resolution mechanism where complaints, allegations and breaches of CEC conduct policies can be received and heard.

Independent Third Party for CEC

CEC has engaged the services of an Independent Safe Sport Officer who will work with you through the complaints process. We understand how important it is to have options when it comes to reporting issues in a safe and secure way.

Contact Brian Ward directly to report a complaint – Brian is a retired lawyer contracted by CEC to receive and manage complaints independently from CEC staff and directors. It allows for athletes to feel safe reporting a complaint, without the perception of potential repercussions.

CEC Safe Sport Policies

It is vitally important for all participants of the climbing community to familiarize themselves with CEC’s Safe Sport Policies in order to educate themselves on how to recognize and report incidents of harassment and/or abuse. For a full list of CEC policies, click here.

Community Code of Conduct CEC supports equal opportunity, prohibits discriminatory practices, and is committed to providing an environment in which all individuals can safely participate in sport and are treated with respect and fairness. To ensure a safe and positive environment within the programs, activities, and events of CEC, the Community Code of Conduct makes individuals aware that there is an expectation, at all times, of appropriate behaviour consistent with CEC’s core values and policies. It outlines general responsibilities of each individual, as well as additional responsibilities depending on each individual’s role. It also includes reasonable alcohol and cannabis consumption guidelines.
Discipline and Complaints Policy Individuals are expected to comply with the policies, rules and regulations of CEC. Non-compliance may result in sanctions (or disciplinary action). The Discipline and Complaints Policy ensures individuals understand the discipline and complaints process, outlines how to report a complaint and explains how complaints will be handled.
Appeal Policy CEC recognizes the right of any member to appeal decisions made by CEC. The Appeal Policy provides individuals with a fair and timely appeal process. It outlines what decisions can be appealed, and explains how and when to file an appeal. It also explains the procedure for an appeal hearing.
Screening Policy Screening staff and volunteers is a vital part of providing a safe sporting environment and has become a common practice among sport organizations that provide programs and services to the community. The Screening Policy explains the CEC screening requirements for all individuals at all levels, including young people. It outlines how the screening procedure works, how to obtain background checks (and when they are required), and how often you have to complete screening requirements.
2021 Screening Requirements Deleted:The 2021 Screening Requirements document summarizes the screening and training requirements that are either recommended or required for various roles at CEC, based on the risk level associated with the role.
